Boars’ target in sight

Harefield Gazette - - SPORT -

ALL Eastcote Hockey Club’s men’s first XI want for Christmas is to be top of the league – and that prize is now in their own hands.

Joe Snell’s double and goals from Gabriel Emery, Ian Sadler and Stephen Riddleston wrapped up a thumping win over Milton Keynes on Saturday, taking the Boars second in the MBB Regional One standings.

That means if Eastcote claim the points on their travels to leaders Maidenhead this weekend, they will be looking down on the rest over the festive break.

There was more good news too for the Ladies, who further eased their South Clubs Division 3A relegation worries with a 3-2 win over fellow strugglers West Hampstead 2s.

Catherine Ashton’s short-corner strike gave the hosts a narrow half-time lead and they looked set for a comfortable win when Leanne Cooper doubled the advantage from another set-piece soon after the break.

The visitors, though, hit back with two goals in quick succession to leave the game in the balance as the clock ticked down.

A heroine was required and Eleri Smith stepped into the breach for Eastcote, slamming home from another short corner in the dying minutes.

It leaves the ladies six points clear of the drop zone at the midway point.
