‘Horrendous sight to behold’
FLY-TIPPED RUBBISH UNDER THE A40 IS ‘GETTING WORSE’
THE mattresses, appliances and wood dumped under the A40 near Uxbridge have still not been cleared two months after GetWestLondon first reported it.
Piles of rubbish have been dumped under the road, near the Colne Valley Regional Park, and the amount of waste has increased since the problem was first reported.
Photos taken throughout April (pictured right) show the amount of black bags, furniture and wood dumped under the A40 access ramp north of Uxbridge.
Hillingdon resident Robin Ditchburn told GetWestLondon: “The refuse pictured in your article hasn’t been addressed or removed.
“In fact a group of people have been using it to build bike ramps in another area of the bridge as a way of clearing it up themselves.
“No sooner had they made it look tidier and less like a dump, more refuse has been tipped.
“This time, it’s not a couple of fridges and some old furniture, it’s piles and piles of commercial waste, building materials and general waste.
“It’s a horrendous sight to behold and sickening to witness in person.
“I am a local resident and I regularly walk my dog through the area.
“The rubbish has left it inaccessible, I had to carry my dog so as to avoid injury through broken glass, tiles and nails.”
GetWestLondon first wrote about the problem on February 20 and the waste appears to have increased since then.
Part of the issue seems to stem from confusion over who is responsible for the area. Hillingdon Council said the land falls outside of the borough while South Bucks District Council said the land may be under Highways England jurisdiction.
The A40 itself is the responsibility of Highways England but the land underneath may be privately owned.
Mr Ditchburn said he believes someone has removed the lock from the gate and replaced it with their own to gain access to the land and large concrete barriers have been moved to allow vans in.
GetWestLondon has approached Hillingdon Council, South Bucks District Council and the Highways Agency for comment.
