Harefield Gazette - - NEWS -

SOUTH Western Railway (SWR) has apologised after 300 people were evacuated when a train derailed at Wimbledon railway station on Monday morning (November 6).

The incident happened at around 6am and there were delays to both SWR main line services and District Line services until around 3.30pm, despite lines reopening at around midday.

Officers from British Transport Police (BTP), firefighters from London Fire Brigade (LFB) and London Ambulance Service paramedics all attended the incident.

Four passengers were treated following the incident and eight fire engines sent to the scene.

SWR head of customer experience Christian Neill said: “I am very sorry for the disruption many of you would have likely experienced while travelling on our network today (Monday) following the low-speed derailment of one our trains near Wimbledon.”

Mr Neil continued: “We are grateful to the emergency services who responded swiftly to this incident and thankful there were no serious injuries to any of our passengers.

“We worked hard to ensure customers were able to leave the train as quickly and safely as possible, with this process completed by 8.15am.”

He added: “There is extensive damage to the track which our infrastructure partners are working to repair as soon as possible.

“During the morning, we also suffered two separate train faults on our network.

“Although these were rectified quickly, this hampered our ability to recover the train service.”

All train passengers were safely evacuated from the train by 8.15am.

London Underground services were suspended between Parsons Green and Wimbledon before later being pre-emptively suspended until close of service.

SWR said it had made alternative arrangements to help customers with their journeys on Monday.

Passengers were reportedly left “violently shaken” during the derailment before being safely evacuated from the carriage.

Passenger David Holman tweeted: “Train just shaken violently in a train derailment outside Wimbledon #derailment.”

After the evacuation, those affected were taken to the station where they received assistance from members of staff.
