An absurdly good festive night out

Harefield Gazette - - COMMUNITY NEWS -

FOR their next production, Ruislip Dramatic Society will be providing a hilarious slice of festive cheer for all to enjoy at the Compass Theatre.

The group will be performing Alan Ayckbourn’s Absurd Person Singular, a classic Christmas comedy which peeps behind the kitchen door at three Christmas parties revealing hysterical happenings but also the changing fortunes of its party hosts.

Three Christmases, three kitchens and three wildly incompatible couples provide the ingredients for this wonderful seasonal offering from Britain’s favourite playwright.

There’s the ‘lower class’ but very much up and coming Hopcrofts in their bright new, gadget filled kitchen, keen to impress with a little party for their bank manager and his wife and an architect neighbour.

Then there’s the architect himself and his wife in their neglected, untidy flat with a somewhat wild and aggressive dog. Lastly there’s the bank manager and his wife in their freezing cold, large and slightly modernised, old Victorian style kitchen.

Chaos reigns as social climbing turns into domestic disaster in this agonisingly funny Christmas com- edy. Absurd Person Singular won the Evening Standard award for Best Comedy when it was first performed and is now seen as an Ayckbourn classic. A West End hit, it ran for nearly 1,000 performances in its first year before opening on Broadway and has since had countless revivals plus a TV adaptation by the BBC.

Alan Ayckbourn himself is now second only to Shakespeare as the most performed playwright in the world. He remains one of Britain’s most celebrated playwrights, and Absurd Person Singular will delight both fans and newcomers alike as a classic example of his talent for comedy.

Absurd Person Singular is not one, but three Christmas parties you are not going to want to miss. So, dig out your Christmas jumper, put on your party hat and book now for this brilliantly funny festive treat.

Absurd Person Singular will be on from November 15 to 18, at the Compass Theatre, Glebe Avenue, Ickenham. Tickets: £12 or £11 concessions (available on Wed/Thu only).
