Borough show ‘tremendous character’ to hold on to win
HILLINGDON Borough climbed to sixth in the Spartan South Midlands Division One table after a 3-2 victory over bottom side Codicote on Saturday.
A smart Paul Murphy finish was followed by a quickly-taken free kick which found Amin Belaid, who duly slotted home to make it two inside 13 minutes. As the half progressed, Boro should have increased their lead but missed several gilt-edged chances, striking the post in the process.
The visitors made Boro pay and halved the deficit, but after striking the post again in the second half, top goalscorer Marcus Greenidge restored the hosts’ two-goal lead in the 70th minute after neatly lifting the ball over the keeper.
Boro then hit the woodwork again, but it was Codicote who struck next with a long-range free kick to set up a nervous finish and, despite huge amounts of pressure late on from the visitors, Boro held on.
With manager Kurt Herbert away, assistant Cipri Ciprian was delighted, saying: “I was very impressed with the passion and desire that our players showed and we showed tremendous character to hold on.”
