The New York hotelier Michael Achenbaum, who is behind the city’s glittering Gansevoort hotels, has brought his magic touch to a red-brick site on the corner of Curtain Road in Shoreditch. This fashionable haven now offers 120 guest-rooms and suites, and the second outpost of the chef Marcus Samuelsson’s Harlem soul-food restaurant Red Rooster, where live jazz and whole fried chickens presented with fireworks are the order of the day. You’ll also find a wellness sanctuary and screening-room, plus access to a membersonly area that comprises a music venue, two late-night bars and plenty of workspaces. Walls feature original Banksy acid-house artwork and Mick Rock’s portraits of legendary musicians, from David Bowie to Queen. But the pièce de résistance is Lido, the hotel’s rooftop oasis, where you can sip potent gin and tonics in fishbowl glasses from the wooden deckchairs that line the bijou pool.
