The regal British romance that inspired Ermanno Scervino’s latest line

For the Ermanno Scervino A/W 18 collection, the label’s designer looked first to the codes of quintessential aristocratic style, taking inspiration from Edward VIII, who appears on the moodboard alongside swatches of traditional British herringbone tweed and pin-striped suiting. Heavy masculine coats are belted and worn over dresses for an allure that remains resolutely lady-like while offering a piquant contrast in textures. ‘I had in my mind some photographs of Marilyn Monroe in oversized men’s sweaters,’ he says, ‘but still managing to look sensual.’ For the evening, exquisite gowns of cascading frills and frothing Chantilly lace recall the beauty of a blossoming English garden in summertime. ‘I imagined hand-crocheted organza ruffles that bloom like roses. Overall, the collection defines the Ermanno Scervino woman in all her different expressions of femininity.’ charlotte davey
