A LARGE crowd gathered under the shadow of the burnt out Grenfell Tower to take part in a silent walk of remembrance on Monday afternoon, June 19.

It was part of the launch of the Justice for Grenfell campaign, and took place from North Kensington Library, on Ladbroke Grove, to the Grenfell site.

The campaign’s legal strategy will be steered under the advice of human rights barrister Michael Mansfield QC.

The crowd carried banners and posters as they spent time slowly walking from Ladbroke Grove to Latymer Community Church, along Cambridge Gardens.

It was a walk which would normally take no more than 10 minutes, but this sombre march lasted close to 90 minutes.

Beginning at 4pm, it ended with speeches beneath the Westway, close to Westway Sports and Fitness Centre, with many criticising the response of Kensington and Chelsea Council and the establishment.

The meeting began at North Kensington Library, a building which has been the subject of several demonstrations since 2016 after the local authority announced plans to lease the building to a private school, while building a new library and youth centre, complete with commercial space, at nearby Lancaster Road.

In a statement it said: “We will leave no stone unturned to ensure that there is justice for each and eve- ryone affected by this tragic event.

“The campaign’s ultimate aim is to be a platform for change to ensure that such an event never happens again.”

Campaign co-ordinator Toby Laurent Belson said: “It is hard to be prepared for something as devastating as this.

“However, as a community we have shown and will continue to show that we are prepared in ways that are above and beyond what any public authority can provide for us.”

Earlier on Monday a national minute’s silence was held to remember the victims of the fire. A vigil was also held on Monday night in Parliament Square.
