Shedding light on a snowy mystery
STAN Rooney of Burbage has written in about our past times article last week.
It shows a car crash in the snow outside a petrol station. We asked readers if they could provide any more detail - who was the driver, where did the accident take place?
Stan wrote and said: “Thank you for including pictures of the seriously damaged E Type Jaguar Coupe, taken in 1963.
“The picture is fascinating, in terms of the car and its location.
“I suspect the petrol station is the predecessor to the Texaco garage next to The Harvester on the A5, especially as there is an electricity pylon across the road.
“The car is a very early example, possibly 1961/62 with a rare hard top.
“The registration confirms it is from Leicester and most probably supplied by Sturgess’s.
“Unfortunately, the first letter of the number plate is invisible but having checked every possible combination, it appears it no longer exists on that plate.
“It is likely to have been scrapped in any case at that time, due to the substantial damage.
“I wonder if one of the two men standing in the doorway is the driver?
“If he had a passenger, I would imagine he would have been quite shaken up. Stan Rooney, Burbage” Meanwhile on Facebook others had different theories about where this snowy smash had taken place, pointing the finger towards Leicester Road.
Jeanette Smith said: “I think it was the petrol station on Leicester Road at the bottom of Shilton hill.
“They had a separate building like that next to the house.”
While Lynn Vickers said: “It looks like the one on the A46 near the Sapcote turn.”
Others agreed with Adam Randles saying: “Is that the petrol station that used to be at the bottom of Shilton Hill?”
And Simon Gear responding: “The last 2 letters of Leicester on the sign so its Leicester road, tha’s the road at the bottom of Shilton Hill.”
David Nicholls was more concerned about the garage’s paint job.
He said: “Looks like the painters and decorators have only done half a job so must have been Friday afternoon.”
