‘Let me off, it’s Christmas...’

Hinckley Times - - NEWS -

A DRIVER caught doing 110mph on the M1 asked the police to let him off because it was nearly Christmas.

Leicestershire officers, who were working as part of the East Midlands Tactical Road Policing Team patrolling the motorway, tweeted about the incident last week.

They said the driver of the speeding Audi claimed he had only been going 80mph and not 110mph before asking the officers to show some Christmas generosity.

But they reported the driver, who will now face a fine and possible disqualification.

They said in their tweet: “This vehicle was followed on the M1 motorway in @ leicspolice area doing 110mph ... when stopped the driver says he was only doing 80mph and we should cut him some slack as it’s nearly Christmas! Driver reported. SLOW DOWN!! #fatal4.”

The police and other emergency services are concentrating their road safety prevention work on the Fatal 4 - speeding, drink-driving, using a mobile phone while at the wheel and not wearing a seatbelt.
