Ger­man chil­dren gather in the ru­ins of Ber­lin shortly af­ter the Nazi sur­ren­der. The strug­gle for the cap­i­tal re­sulted in hun­dreds of thou­sands of Ger­man and Soviet ca­su­al­ties, with tens of thou­sands of civil­ians killed and many more forced to flee the ru­ined city. Over 1 mil­lion Soviet sol­diers re­ceived a medal for their part in the city’s cap­ture.
