Un­der Sy­dir Kov­pak’s lead­er­ship, par­ti­san units fought a bru­tal guer­rilla war against the Ger­mans as well as anti-soviet Ukrainian Na­tion­al­ist forces. Partisans were com­prised of civil­ians who took up arms, as well as Red Army sur­vivors. in all, a pur­ported 250,000 partisans died fight­ing the Nazi in­vaders while Soviet records claimed half a mil­lion Ger­mans killed, wounded or cap­tured by their ac­tions. Ad­di­tion­ally, 60,000 Rus­sians were killed by partisans when con­sid­ered Ger­man col­lab­o­ra­tors.

Kov­pak sur­vived the war, later serv­ing in the Soviet

Ukraine gov­ern­ment.
