In Kansas, 54-year-old anti-al­co­hol cam­paigner Car­rie Na­tion be­gins her spree of de­stroy­ing sa­loons and tav­erns. Her hus­band joked that she should use a hatchet for max­i­mum ef­fect. Re­ply­ing, “That’s the most sen­si­ble thing you have said since I mar­ried you,” she went around the Mid­west, con­tin­u­ing her own brand of vig­i­lante jus­tice armed with an axe, get­ting ar­rested 32 times.

Mrs Na­tion was a rel­a­tively large woman, at al­most six feet tall. She de­scribed her­self as a “bull­dog run­ning along at the feet of Je­sus”
