In au­tumn 1917, the sec­ond revo­lu­tion within a year gripped Rus­sia. Where the Fe­bru­ary Revo­lu­tion had over­thrown Tsar Ni­cholas II, the Oc­to­ber Revo­lu­tion top­pled his suc­ces­sor, the Pro­vi­sional Govern­ment. At Lenin’s urg­ing, the Bol­she­vik Party cap­tured key build­ings in the cap­i­tal, Pet­ro­grad. Their au­da­cious coup laid the foun­da­tions of the world’s first com­mu­nist state and changed the course of Rus­sian his­tory.
