Spot­ting a gap in the market, pub­lish­ing mag­nate Al­fred Harmsworth launched the Daily Mir­ror –a news­pa­per “for women, run by women”. It failed to con­vince read­ers, so a year later the pa­per’s fe­male editor and jour­nal­ists were fired and it was re­branded as a “pa­per for men and women”.
