Ed­ward I– a King no­to­ri­ous for his bru­tal treat­ment of the Scots and ban­ish­ment of Jews – as­cended to the English throne in Novem­ber 1272, while he was away on cru­sade. This was the first time that an English king had suc­ceeded with­out a corona­tion. Upon news of his fa­ther’s death, Ed­ward agreed to re­turn, but took a leisurely route back and was crowned al­most two years later.
