Thou­sands of Hun­gar­i­ans rose up against Soviet rule and their own bru­tal se­cret po­lice in au­tumn 1956, with free­dom fight­ers forc­ing their op­pres­sor’s tanks to with­draw. But at dawn on 4 Novem­ber, Soviet forces launched an all-out as­sault on Bu­dapest, crush­ing the up­ris­ing with the loss of 3,000 lives.
