African-Amer­i­can ac­tivist Rosa Parks has been called the ‘mother of the free­dom move­ment’ for her act of de­fi­ance on 1 De­cem­ber 1955. By re­fus­ing to give up her seat on the bus to a white man, in vi­o­la­tion of Alabama’s seg­re­ga­tion laws, she in­spired the suc­cess­ful year-long Montgomery bus boy­cott or­gan­ised by Martin Luther King.
