There is spec­u­la­tion that this clas­sic game was in­vented by chil­dren in south-east Eng­land dur­ing the early-me­dieval pe­riod. How­ever, the first def­i­nite ref­er­ence wasn’t made un­til circa 1575, which refers to a game of ‘Kricket’.
