Ead­ward Muy­bridge set out to an­swer a hotly de­bated ques­tion of his day: whether all four of a horse’s hooves leave the ground while gal­lop­ing. He de­vel­oped a way to take photos with a very short ex­po­sure time, and proved that they do.
