No. The story that the fu­ture US pres­i­dent cut down his fa­ther’s tree and then owned up to it is a com­plete fabri­ca­tion. It was in­vented by one of Washington’s first bi­og­ra­phers, a book­seller named Ma­son Locke Weems, who wanted to show that Washington’s pri­vate virtues were the cause of his pub­lic great­ness.
