The Cuban regime has fallen, Pres­i­dent Ful­gen­cio Batista has fled, and the revo­lu­tion­ary Fidel Cas­tro is on a vic­to­ri­ous march to Ha­vana to take power. It’s 1 Jan­uary 1959, the day that Cas­tro’s gueril­las – led by Ar­gen­tinian Ernesto ‘Che’ Gue­vara – achieved a de­ci­sive vic­tory by cap­tur­ing the city of Santa Clara. Here, Cas­tro, stand­ing on a makeshift bal­cony with his arms raised, gives a pas­sion­ate speech to hun­dreds of his sup­port­ers. He would rule Cuba for nearly 50 years.
