Louis Le Prince gath­ered a small group of fam­ily and friends to a gar­den in Round­hay, Leeds, on 14 Oc­to­ber 1888 with a sim­ple re­quest: walk in a cir­cle. Us­ing a ma­hogany, sin­gle-lens cam­era, the French in­ven­tor then shot the scene – the cou­ple of sec­onds that still ex­ist are thought to rep­re­sent the old­est sur­viv­ing film in his­tory. Be­fore the first pub­lic screen­ing, how­ever, Le Prince boarded a train and was never seen again.
