BRIGHT & BEAUTIFUL

- MEL SHERWOOD

Long before I knew very much of the folk art and antiques of Eastern Europe, their romantic appeal, vibrant colours and incredible detail had won them a soft spot in my heart. But these ‘naïve’ antiques o er so much more than their beauty – each unique piece is imbued with a wealth of tradition and artisan heritage. And their bright palettes, combined with such joyful patterns, make these soulful treasures the perfect additions to your interior this spring and Easter. I’m thrilled that we are showing you how to display them in your home, from page 42.

This month, our houses also celebrate the artisan and the unique. Take our tour of Rory Young’s townhouse (page 54) for a masterclass in traditional conservation, while interior designer Kelly James has filled a 1930s bungalow with her individual style (page 76), as well as an abundance of mid- century finds.

Meanwhile, turn to page 113 for our preview of what may well be the biggest auction of the decade; the estate of Peggy and David Rockefeller is due to go under the hammer in New York City this May. With this vast sale set to break myriad records, we explore the eclectic collection, and find the finest fine china to a little-seen Picasso, as well as one or two folk art pieces…
