BRITISH successes continued during the second week of this tour. William Funnell headed a world-ranking speed on Billy Angelo, while Harry Charles celebrated his 18th birthday with a win on Victor in Sunday’s 1.45m two-phase. Michael Whitaker partnered Calisto Blue, a 10-year-old he began riding in May, into fourth place in the grand prix jump-off behind Frenchman Julien Epaillard (Usual Suspect D’Auge).

In the two-star equivalent, Jess Mendoza (Horst Van De Mispelaere) and Peter Charles (ABC Quantum Cruise) were holding the top two places, but Frenchman Laurent Guillet thundered round on Sultan Du Chateau to demote the Brits. Allana Clutterbuc­k won a pony speed on Sultan Du Bary and Flo Norris headed a 1.10m jump-off class with the 2015 Horse of the Year Show newcomers champion Darling HDH.

The rest of the show belonged to 15-year-old Ellie Hall-McAteer. She celebrated selection for Britain’s European team by winning the pony grand prix on Tixylix, then swapped on to Dazzle II to take equal first in a 1.25m two-phase before capturing her first-ever senior grand prix victory in the one-star section. With extra prizes on offer, Ellie’s exploits won her 24 pairs of shoes courtesy of Belgian fashion company Azur.

CSI2*/1* ZUIDWOLDE, NETHERLAND­S

SPENCER ROE finished this show in great form. After riding his six-year-old Gusto into second place behind Dutch rider Gerrit Veenstra (After Pleasure Toltien) in the one-star grand prix, the 24-year-old from Lincolnshi­re was third on Wonder Why in the two-star equivalent, won by Mexico’s Ernesto Canseco (Celebrity VDL).

James Billington won Friday’s world ranking class on Baltic VDL from Jake Saywell (Havinia

Van De Roshoeve), while Ireland’s Ciaran Dreeling headed a

1.35m jump-off competitio­n on Lord Lenitas.

CSI2*/1* BLAYE, FRANCE

GRACE BARTON flew the flag at the 40th edition of this CSI. Although she was just outside the placings in the grand prix, the French-based Brit scored a double of speed class wins with her home-bred Darco mare Inky.

CSI2* TRYON, USA

BRITON Amanda Derbyshire took home more than $20,500 (£15,660) after winning the welcome stakes and finishing sixth in the grand prix on Lady Maria BH and riding Sibell BH into third place in a 1.45m jump-off class. Amanda’s partner, David Blake, was third in the power and speed on Goldbreake­r, a horse produced by Mark Turnbull.
