NO MORE INSURANCE

-

Sir — I was not surprised to read of a drop in people insuring for vets’ bills (news, 6 July). I have been paying vets’ bills insurance for many years and last year had my first incident requiring a large claim. I anticipated a painless process, but how wrong I was! It took more than two months for the underwriters to pay out. What’s more, communication was poor and I ended up paying the vets directly then asking the insurers to pay me.

After that, I did not renew any of my horses’ policies, but now save a sum of money each month (equal to the amount of the premium), to cover future vets’ bills. When I think of the money this insurance company has had in premiums over the years, it is more than the claim amounted to.

A number of friends have also had problems with exclusions being added by “accident”. These companies are quick enough to put them on, but trying to get them removed is another story.
