Sir — About 10 years ago, there was a campaign to get show horses “fit not fat”. At one of the championship events, there were reps from one of the feed suppliers carrying out condition scoring, and there was talk of judges moving fat horses down the line.

This year I took my cob to Equifest, but was disgusted by how much weight some ponies at the top of the line were carrying. I had assumed the showing world had kept up its momentum for fit not fat horses, but when it comments on the weight of riders due to animal welfare concerns, surely the same applies to horses.

If judges put fat ponies at the top of the line, owners will continue to produce them.
