Witham Villa, Leics | Hargate Arena, Derbys Mandy Ellis and her coloured part-bred Irish draught gelding Traveller landed a prelim with over 70% at Witham Villa.
Mandy bought the 16-year-old former county show horse to regain her confidence with 18 months ago, and this was just their third British Dressage
“It’s my last attempt at dressage because I’m in my late 50s and probably won’t have a horse like him again, but he’s won every class so far and if I never get a score like that again, I’ll be happy,” said Mandy. “I have lessons with Bernice O’Reilly and Jenny Brown, and between them, they’ve got my head around riding him forwards and it’s made a difference to our marks.”
Alongside dressage, Mandy also now enjoys hacking out.
“He’s given me my confidence back in a lot of ways,” she added. “I didn’t hack much before, but he is so fabulous that we ride out now too.”
Thirteen-year-old Holly Clarke and her part-bred Welsh gelding Newoak Truffel headed two classes at Hargate Arena, including prelim 2 with over 70% and their first ever elementary with 68.33%.
“He was just an ordinary Pony Club pony when we got him and in the last year they’ve achieved so much together,” said Holly’s mother, Alex. “They event at BE90 level and are doing really well.”
The pair had a busy summer competing at various championships including the Pony Club Championships, where they won their intermediate dressage arena before finishing as reserve champions in the ride-off.
