Best of my fun... Showjumper Amanda Derbyshire

The showjumper on wild partying in Miami, meeting Simon Cowell, Big Star memories and taking the rough with the smooth

Horse & Hound - - News - H&H

My first pony…

A five-year-old grey 11.2hh Welsh pony, Sparkle, who was so naughty. But she taught me to be brave.

My secret weapon…

My first original, extremely wornin Devoucoux saddle. I often tell the grooms to put it on for a big competition — mentally, it puts me in my comfort zone.

My money-saving secret…

Buying a wallet to hold my cash and cards in. I put money in my pockets, which often ends up lost.

Eating out…

At Nobu (Asian fusion) and Mr Chow (Chinese); they both have restaurants in New York and Miami and the food in both is incredible. Not to mention the fact that I met Simon Cowell in Mr Chow while competing in the Miami Longines Global Champions Tour (GCT).

Remembering when…

I won the speed final at the Washington International Horse Show in 2016 with Luibanta BH. “Lulu” is such a special horse, bought as an eight-year-old from Ellen Whitaker and the most straightforward, easy and kind mare I’ve ever ridden. Recently I was placed fourth in the $1m (£890,000) grand prix at Horse shows In The Sun (HITS) on her and it was the biggest course I’ve ever jumped.

Best event after-party… The GCT in Miami tops them all. On the final night, we always head to LIV nightclub and it is wild!

It’s always nice to have a night to unwind with friends after a competitive show like that one.

The best advice…

If a round doesn’t go to plan, you’re allowed 30 minutes to get mad, re-evaluate and then you have to move on. In this sport, you have to take the ups with the downs and it’s pointless beating yourself up all night.

Getting away from it all… I love to travel and twice a year after the summer and winter show series are over, my fiancé David Blake and I try to get away. My favourite trips so far have been to Cape Town, South Africa, Thailand and, most recently, touring Italy.

The best performance I’ve ever seen…

Nick Skelton and Big Star winning gold in Rio. A year before, it was probably against all the odds, but it was inspirational to see how hard work, planning, a great team and belief can beat those odds.

When I’m reading…

Harry Potter. I have read those books a hundred times and they make me feel like I’m a student at Hogwarts.

My biggest indulgence…

Oysters, Terry’s Chocolate Orange and Revolve Fashion online shopping.

The best date I’ve been on…

The night my boyfriend proposed this summer in Michigan on the lake. It was a total surprise and he asked me on the beach at sunset with a bottle of Veuve.
