WASH AND GO
If you have space in your bathroom for a separate shower, whether that’s in a corner, recess or even along the length of one wall, there are a number of style and function options to consider. Enclosures come in sizes from a compact 700 x 700mm to a spacious 1800 x 1000mm, and can reach up to two metres high. Walk-in styles are floor-to-ceiling enclosures with a gap to step through rather than a glass door.
GLASS WORKS
Frameless enclosures and panels, where the glass is joined to glass, are 8mm or 10mm thick. Framed enclosures can be made with less substantial 4mm thick glass, but 6mm is preferable.
All glazing must be toughened and have a BS Kitemark. If you’re ordering a custom-made design there’s a wealth of glazing options to choose from such as extraclear low-iron glass, frosted, tinted, mirrored or even digitally printed. A protective coating can be applied to avoid hard water marks.
DOORS & TRAYS
Hinged designs open outwards, providing wide access to the enclosure. Pivot doors, which rotate on pins, also open out but take up less room, while sliding and bifold styles need no opening space. Clever in-swing doors protrude minimally when open. Walk-in showers have a low or floorlevel tray, while standard trays can be up to 40mm deep. They’re typically made of stone resin finished with acrylic but enamelled steel designs are also available. The tray may be sold separately from the enclosure.
BESPOKE OPTIONS
Unusual shapes such as to fit angled spaces in a loft room may call for a custom-made design. Measurements or a template can be supplied by your builder or fitter to a bespoke supplier or your selected company will visit your home and take precise measurements.
