We’ve been hearing about the benefits of smart meters for months now, but millions of UK consumers are frustrated by delays in fitting them. Stephen Shawcross from Smart Energy GB, which represents the installation programme, says that, while the plan is to fit more than 50 million smart gas and electricity meters in UK homes and businesses by 2020, fewer than seven million are in place.

‘Smart meters are installed to energy suppliers’ own timetables,’ Stephen explains. The latest figures from industry magazine Energyst report that British Gas has installed about 3.5m smart meters,

Eon 750,000-plus, SSE about 400,000 and EDF 150,000. At the end of last year, Npower had installed 130,000, and Scottish Power 240,000.

Most energy companies are carrying out installation area by area, rather than responding directly to individual requests. So if you want to be first in the queue, what can you do? Ring your energy supplier direct and ask when installation is planned for your area. Then follow them on Twitter to keep up to date.
