Mo­tor­way closed af­ter death fall from bridge

The east­bound car­riage­way of the mo­tor­way was re­opened just af­ter 11.20am and the west­bound at around 1pm. Traf­fic con­ges­tion built up in sur­round­ing towns and vil­lages while the mo­tor­way was closed.

A West York­shire Po­lice spokesman said: “Po­lice were called at 9.52am to reports of a con­cern for safety for a male on a bridge at Rish­worth at the M62.

“The male fell from the bridge and sus­tained fa­tal in­juries.”

The tragic in­ci­dent re­sulted in se­ri­ous prob­lems on the M62. At its height traf­fic queued back as far as Junc­tion 26 at Chain Bar, near Cleck­heaton.

Scam­mon­den Bridge is main­tained by gov­ern­ment agency High­ways Eng­land, who af­ter say­ing noth­ing could be done to make it safer, have in re­cent months said they are look­ing at what can be done fol­low­ing a num­ber of deaths.
