Com­mu­nity bid to help the lonely

has been run­ning a pro­ject to help el­derly peo­ple which is funded by the Peo­ple’s Health Trust Ac­tive Com­mu­nity fund­ing pro­gramme.

A group of peo­ple who would oth­er­wise not get out and meet oth­ers meet ev­ery Mon­day (11am1pm) at the as­so­ci­a­tion’s com­mu­nity cen­tre in Hall Av­enue, Thorn­ton Lodge.

The as­so­ci­a­tion have run a se­ries of coach trips to sea­side re­sorts in­clud­ing Llan­dudno in North Wales, Blackpool and Scar­bor­ough.

As­so­ci­a­tion trea­surer and for­mer Kirklees coun­cil­lor Jamil Akhtar said: “The pur­pose of the sea­side trip is re­mov­ing the prob­lem of so­cial iso­la­tion and to en­able older peo­ple to en­joy life, main­tain­ing health and so­cial con­tact with other peo­ple.

“It is im­por­tant to help them re­main in­de­pen­dent, lead sat­is­fy­ing and ful­fill­ing lives, and also im­prove the qual­ity of life.”
