Schoolgirl will be in danger on this route

-

Reading about the girl refused a free bus pass (Mail, September 19), it seems to me that although she lives only just within the three miles of the school rule it doesn’t take into consideration the safety of the child on the roads between the two places.

Anybody who knows that route will know that most of it is along roads with no pavements, and part of it is down quite a steep hill that, at times, is very foggy.

Winter is almost here and the fog on that hill can be so thick that drivers can hardly see beyond the front of their own bonnets.

Although not living in Swanland or Melton I have used that route myself travelling between Hessle and Welton and have been surprised just how thick the fog can be on that hill.

You can be driving along the road with almost perfect visibility, then when you reach the hill and with no warning find visibility almost at zero.

In the interests of the safety of the child requesting a free bus pass, surely the conditions of the journey should also be taken into consideration?

This girl will be in some danger if she has to travel this route on foot in such weather conditions.
