Mayism: the art of evasion?
People have been asking whether there is a “May ism ”, as there was a Thatcherism. As far as I can see, Mayism isn’t an ideology, it’s a trick of language – careful and vague promises.
Grammar schools may be for good for every child, or they may not; NHS investment may be new money, or it may not. We may get migrant workers down and the defence budget up–or not. Pensioners may suffer, school pupils do well on free breakfast rather than lunch, the just-about-managing feel better under Tory income taxes – but don’t quote me. B rex it maybe hard or soft, but don’t bet on either.
Thatcher was iron, May is mercury. If Corbyn does half of what he says, he’ll still be doing better than Theresa May.
