Set up a RAID drive
If you want to make big backups happen faster, the solution might be to set up a RAID 0 array with two hard drives that splits the data across them for faster write speeds.
1 List the disks
Launch Terminal and type diskutil list to see the drives connected to your Mac. Note the identifiers next to the drives you want to use.
2 Create your raid
Now type diskutil appleraid create stripe Raid0drive JHFS+
[first identifier] [second identifier].
