GET TO KNOW HER SIGNATURE STYLE When asked about the inspiration behind her designs, Nicky replies: ‘Mid-century all the way! After the war, the Fifties became an amazing era for architecture, art, science and design – anything seemed possible and everything was new and exciting. I’m an avid collector of that period’s furniture.’

In her teens, she became slightly obsessed with all things Sixties. ‘I loved Mary Quant, Biba and André Courrèges, and wanted to follow women like Jean Muir and Zandra Rhodes into a career in fashion, until I discovered product and packaging design,’ she says.

Nicky’s love of animals has also been a source of inspiration for her. ‘I’ve been a vegan for more than 12 years and I’m hugely interested in all aspects of British wildlife and nature, which is probably why it appears on so many Magpie products,’ she explains. ‘I live in a Tudor house in the woods in West Sussex with my husband Ian, who is the design director of our sibling brand Jay. Being surrounded by nature has been a huge influence on us.’

The couple are both collectors. ‘Ian has a huge assortment of old films, anatomy models and Fifties educational wall charts, and combined with my Fifties and Sixties pottery, prints and furniture, it makes for quite an eclectic mix,’ she says. ‘I guess you could say that I’m a magpie by name and by nature – our home is full of the treasures we’ve collected.’
