Make it work for you
WALL-HUNG BATHROOM FITTINGS Minimalist and low maintenance, wall-mounted loos, basins and taps are the modern way to give your bathroom a style lift
KAT’S CHOICE:
Raised off the floor, wall-hung sanitaryware is sleek and modern, and is easier to clean than floor-standing designs.
QHow is it installed? Wall-hung sanitaryware is designed to be bolted to a steel frame behind a stud wall. Once the wall is plastered and tiled or painted, all you’ll see is glorious sanitaryware. You can also buy furniture designed for wall-hung fittings if a new wall isn’t needed.
QWhat height should fittings hang at? There are no set heights, so if you’re tall go for a higher washbasin. In general, 80-85cm is considered a good height for basins and standard loos sit 40cm from the floor.
QDoes wall-hanging take up more space? Building out a new wall, in front of an existing wall, will reduce the width of your bathroom by between 7.5 and 20cm. The exact figure depends on what you are hanging. A washbasin only needs enough depth for the pipework and frame, whereas with a lavatory you’ll need to conceal a cistern as well.
QWhat if my bathroom is only tiny? Go for a half-wall so that the space above waist-level is wider. You’ll get a handy shelf for toiletries in the process. Also look for compact cistern frames – try Geberit and Roca. Building storage niches into the stud wall around sanitaryware means no space is wasted.
QHow are leaks repaired? It’s rare that washbasin plumbing leaks but most fittings will be accessible by unbolting the bowl. Lavatory cisterns, which have moving parts, should have an access point for maintenance. The easiest solution is to fit a flush panel that pops off for access.
