Fishing with crank baits
ASummer barbel fishing is generally dominated by pellet baits because the species really adores these fishmeal offerings. Using a combination of pellets and groundbait in an open-end feeder is a great tactic, particularly on larger rivers. Regular recasting will help to lay down a constant trail of feed that the barbel will home in on from a long way downstream. If the fish are proving spooky, try a clear nylon or fluorocarbon hooklink that is harder for the fish to see. A smaller hook will also make a difference and a size 10 or 12 forged pattern is strong enough to land any barbel.
Make sure there’s a 5mm gap between the hook and hairrigged bait. Use a hooklength of 3ft-6ft
