Improve Your Coarse Fishing (UK) - - Venturing Off The Beaten Track -

1. RIVER RIBBLE, RIBCHESTER, LANCS

If you are looking to catch a big barbel or a net of quality chub then this scenic gem should come high on your list. Floatfishing with maggots and casters scores for the chub while legering bigger baits such as pellets or meat will fool the barbel. Call Ted Carter Tackle on 01772 253476.

2. RIVER SWALE, NORTHALLERTON, NORTH YORKSHIRE

Fishing close to the cover will produce some stunning chub, with plenty of fish over the 4lb mark present. Traditional waggler and maggot will score, as well as a more specimen-orientated legering approach with bread. Call Northallerton AC on 01609 771117.

3. RIVER CALDER, MIRFIELD, W YORKS

There aren’t many places where you can catch 25lb-plus of silvers, but visit the Calder at the Shipp Inn and that is definitely on the cards. Use both the stick float and waggler with maggots for chub, dace and roach. Call Mirfield AC on 07967 227218.

4. RIVER TRENT, NEWARK, NOTTS

The Bob’s Island zone doesn’t get the attention it deserves which is a shame considering its colossal shoals of chub and barbel. Leave the feeder rods in the car and either fish the float or freeline meat. Call Future Fishing on 01636 612654.

5. GREAT OUSE, RADWELL, BEDS

They say fish thrive on neglect and this stretch is the perfect example of that. Perch grow to 4lb and the chub to 7lb and for some reason anglers rarely go in search of them! Call Vauxhall AC on 07506 378748.

6. RIVER SOAR, SUTTON BONINGTON, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE

This is a predator haven and home to plenty of pike to double figures along with perch to 4lb. It also has a few surprises, with big carp having been landed in the past. Call Loughborough Soar AC on 01509 502970.

7. RIVER THAMES, ABINGDON, OXFORDSHIRE

Trot a float through the swim and on the right day you can come back with a quality silverfish every chuck that will contribute to a 20lb-plus net. There are also some stunning perch to 4lb that fall to worms. Call the local council on 01235 522642.

8. RIVER LEA NAVIGATION, STANSTEAD ABBOTTS, HERTS

Feeder fishing with a traditional cage packed with worms, casters and fishmeal groundbait will fool clonking bream that run to over 7lb. Worms work well for chub and big perch. Call Ware AC on 07768 746059.

9. RIVER THAMES, MEDLEY, OXFORDSHIRE

Regularly fished in matches but ignored by a lot of pleasure anglers. Chuck a feeder and you will find the bream but use the long pole or stick float and you will catch quality roach. Hemp and caster is the best combination for big redfins. Call Masons AC on 01865 435286.

10. RIVER TONE, NEWBRIDGE, SOMERSET

Huge bream shoals maraud up and down this stretch and if you find them you could end up with a 100lb bag. Lay down a big bed of groundbait to stop them in their tracks if they arrive. Call Taunton AA on 07833 535997.
