WELCOME to the latest issue of IYCF. I was fishing at a local the lake the other day happily catching anything that came my way on light waggler and maggot tactics, when suddenly I realised it was dark. I checked the time on my phone and it was 7.45pm. It was only a few weeks earlier that I had been able to sit out till 9.30pm and still see my float tip clearly. I know daylight hours start to get shorter after June 21 but it still seems to catch me out every year! And when this issue comes off sale, it’ll only be a few days until the clocks go back for winter! My plans of catching big carp off the surface will have to be shelved for another year as will banking a new personal best tench. But the arrival of autumn means that it will soon be time to seriously think about one of my favourite species again - perch. The drop shotting and jigging kit will be stashed in the boot of the car ready for any opportune lunchtime sessions and I’ve got a few venues in mind close to home that I’m certain will hold a few big perch. This month’s edition is packed with tactics to ensure your float keeps going under and your rod tip dragged round as we move from summer into autumn. Young match fishing star, Sam Collett, reveals the bait combination he’s been using to great effect and how you can bag up on carp with it (page 24). Canal expert Darren Massy details his favourite groundbait mixes for a range of species (page 34) and if you only have limited time available to go fishing, you’ll definitely enjoy Dave Roberts’ article on quickfire chub tactics (page 30). See you next month.
