Japanese Performance - - PLANET JAP -

JP: HI ANDY, YOUR CAR WASN’T EXACTLY SLOW BEFORE THIS HUGE UPDATE. CAN YOU REMIND US OF WHAT YOU ACHIEVED IN IT?

AF: YEAH SURE. THE CAR USED TO HAVE A TWIN-TURBO SETUP AND RAN A POTENTIAL 1200BHP IN DRAG TRIM. WE RECORDED A 7.74 AT 179MPH QUARTER MILE WITH THAT. ON CIRCUIT WE USED A MAXIMUM OF 800BHP, WHICH HELPED US LAP KNOCKHILL IN 50.3S ON ROAD TYRES AND LOW 49S ON SLICKS, WHICH IS

A RECORD FOR A ROAD CAR. I WON A FEW EVENTS IN IT INCLUDING TEN OF THE BEST SEVERAL TIMES, WHERE THE CAR HIT OVER 200MPH. HOPEFULLY THE NEW VERSION IS A SIGNIFICANT STEP FORWARD

JP: HOW WOULD YOU SUMUP YOUR WTAC ADVENTURE IN 2015?

AF: WE HAD UPS AND DOWNS. IT WAS A SHORT-NOTICE EFFORT TO GET READY AND THE CAR HAD JUST DONE A FULL SEASON OF RACING, SPRINTS, SUPER LAP SCOTLAND, ETC. SO IT WAS DUE FOR AN OVERHAUL. THAT BIT US ON THE ASS WHEN THE ‘BOX FAILED ON US, BUT IT GAVE ME THE BUG TO GO BACK AGAIN. IT WAS AN AWESOME EXPERIENCE, THE CARS OUT THERE ARE SO FAR AHEAD OF ANYTHING IN THE UK

JP: WHAT WERE THE BIGGEST LESSONS YOU LEARNED THERE?

AF: BE PREPARED, AERO WORKS AND TIN TOP CARS ON ROAD TYRES CAN CORNER AT OVER 2GS!

JP: WHEN DID THE REBUILD BEGIN?

AF: THE MOMENT WE GOT THE CAR BACK IN JANUARY 2016

JP: WHAT HAVE YOU CHANGED SINCE THEN?

AF: LOTS! THE BIGGEST CHANGES ARE THE AERO, WHICH IS AMB DESIGNED BUT MAINLY SELF-BUILT, THE SUSPENSION AND DRIVETRAIN SETUP. THE ENGINE IS THE SAME SIX-CYLINDER BOXER AS BEFORE BUT NOW RUNS A SINGLE TWIN-SCROLL PRECISION PT6870, RATHER THAN TWO TURBOS

JP: IS THE CAR LIGHTER OR HEAVIER THAN IT WAS BEFORE?

AP: JUST SLIGHTLY LIGHTER. THE BIGGEST CHANGE IS THE WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION, WHICH IS NOW VERY CLOSE TO 50:50 FRONT AND REAR

JP: WHY HAVE YOU GONE FROMA TWIN TURBO SETUP TO A SINGLE TURBO?

AF: TO SAVE WEIGHT, FOR PACKAGING REASONS AND ALSO TO BENEFIT FROMF ASTER SPOOL-UP. I PREVIOUSLY USED A PAIR OF GT35R BILLET TURBOS

JP: AS AN OWNER-DRIVER, YOU COULD ENTER PRO AMBUT INSTEAD YOU’RE ENTERING PRO, THE TOP TIER OF WTAC WITH THE TOUGHEST COMPETITION. WHY IS THAT?

AF: IN PRO I CAN USE NITROUS OXIDE INJECTION AND HAVE ACCESS TO MORE SETS OF TYRES. IT ALSO HELPS WITH SPONSORSHIP, TOO. PLUS, I LIKE A CHALLENGE!

JP: DO YOU HAVE A SPECIFIC TARGET IN MIND? EITHER A LAP TIME OR A FINISHING POSITION?

AF: A PODIUMW OULD BE GREAT. TO BE THE FASTEST EVER SUBARU AND FASTEST 4WD VISITING CAR WOULD ALSO BE GOOD. THE LOCAL GUYS SPEND A LOT OF TIME TESTING THERE AND EDGE OUT EVERY LAST TENTH FROMT HEIR CARS, PRIOR TO REBUILDING THEM FOR THE EVENT. SO THEY WILL ALWAYS HAVE AN ADVANTAGE, WE JUST NEED TO SEE HOW CLOSE WE CAN GET TO THEM

JP: WHEN WILL YOU HEAD OUT TO WTAC?

AF: THE CAR SHIPS OUT IN EARLY AUGUST, WE FLY OUT AT THE START OF OCTOBER. HOPEFULLY WE WILL GET TO AN SLS EVENT BEFORE THE CAR ENTERS A SHIPPING CONTAINER

JP: WHAT ARE THE LONG-TERMG OALS FOR THE CAR?

AF: POSSIBLY A FULL CARBON-FIBRE OUTER SHELL LIKE SVA, GS2, ETC. AT THE MOMENT WE ARE STILL RUNNING A TRUE TIN-TOP WITH STANDARD CHASSIS BETWEEN THE FRONT AND REAR AXLE LINES, STEEL ROOF, ORIGINAL A, B AND C PILLARS, ETC. SO IN RELATION TO MY COMPETITORS, I’M STILL CARRYING A LOT OF WEIGHT

JP: YOU MENTIONED THE NEW GT-R ‘BOX SHOULD BE BETTER FOR DRAG RACING. DO YOU HAVE A TARGET TIME IN MIND?

AF: SO FAR WE ARE JUST FOCUSED ON WORLD TIME ATTACK BUT ANY IMPROVEMENT ON OUR CURRENT PERSONAL BEST OF 7.74 WOULD BE WELCOME!

JP: AS AN ENTHUSIAST AND PRIVATEER GOING UP AGAINST ESTABLISHED AND WELL-FUNDED WTAC TEAMS, WE RECKON YOU’RE THE SCOTTISH UNDER SUZUKI. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THAT COMPARISON?

AF: I WAS INSPIRED BY UNDER SUZUKI, FOR SURE. HE HAS SHOWN THAT DEDICATION AND HARD WORK CAN GET PRIVATEERS TO A LEVEL WHERE THEY CAN WORRY THE BIG-BUDGET PRO TEAMS

JP: THANKS, ANDY. GOOD LUCK!
