TOYOTA SETS NEW LE MANS 24HR LAP RECORD
It was joy and heartache for Toyota at the recent 24 Hours of Lemans. After last year’s devastating finish, where they were leading the race until their lead car broke down on the final lap and handed victory to Porsche, Toyota were hoping for better luck this year. Initially they got it, as former F1 driver Kamui Kobayashi smashed the outright lap record in his TS050 hybrid, with a 3:14.791. That’s four seconds faster than the old record set by a Porsche Turbo in 1985, when the track had four fewer corners! Toyota locked out the front row for the start but, despite leading the race into the night, their two fastest cars suffered electrical gremlins and ground to a halt on the track. Porsche won yet again and the remaining Toyota driven by Davidson, Buemi and Nakajima finished second in
LMP1 but eighth overall. Toyota clearly have the pace to win, surely they’re due some better luck next year?
