Village life was a big attraction for a young couple looking for a new start in the country.

Claire Hewson, 28, and Paul Buck, 33, who had been renting a flat in Ashford, used the government’s Help to Buy scheme to get a threebedroom house.

The semi-detached house is at Barratt Homes’ Aylesham Village development. Claire, who works as an executive assistant in Canterbury, said: “We didn’t know much about Aylesham but have since fallen in love with the countryside here and the village itself is quirky and cute, with everything that you need, including shops, a cafe and school.”

Paul needs to commute to London, where he works as a manager for St Bartholomew’s Hospital.

He says: “Canterbury has fast connections into London. I can be in Stratford in 49 minutes. Amazingly, the rent that we were paying for a two-bedroom flat in Ashford is now the same as we pay for our mortgage each month.”

Prices range from £225,995 for a three-bedroom mid-terrace family home to £394,995 for a five-bedroom detached home at Aylesham Village.
