We’re splashing out BEFORE we go
How... can you cut your pre-holiday costs? While many people may worry about busting their budget during a summer holiday – new research shows we’re also in danger of racking up big costs as the excitement builds before the trip.
Holidaymakers are likely to spend an average of £273 before they have even left their front door, stocking up on holiday items ranging from goggles and gadgets to games, according to research from American Express.
With people taking an average of two holidays a year, either abroad or in the UK, this could add up to an average annual spend of £546 on holiday preparations – more than the average weekly wage.
Clothing, shoes and accessories to look the part while we’re away, take up the bulk of preholiday costs, the research suggests. This is followed by toys and make-up.
More than two thirds (67%) of holidaymakers start buying holiday treats such as magazines and snacks a month before their trip, the survey of more than 2,000 people found.
