Remarkable fightback seals promotion

Roller Derby

-

Kent Roller Girls secured promotion to Division 2 of the British Roller Derby Championships following an amazing comeback in their play-off match against Norfolk. Kent had won all five of their divisional matches this year against Cornwall, Devon, Surrey, Plymouth and Bath and needed one more victory to secure promotion. The Championships, held in Newark, had eight teams from across the country playing full contact Roller Derby, an extreme sport on quad roller skates. The Norfolk Brawds were leading by over 30 points at half-time, however, Kent staged a remarkable comeback. It began in the first two minutes of the second half by drawing a penalty which gave Kent a chance to start scoring unhindered. It boosted confidence to such an extent that they wiped out the deficit and went on to stage a stunning revival and win 154-138. The Most Valuable Player award went to Maidstone’s Serena Gilbert while Best Jammer went to Tonbridge’s Alina Usurelu, The team are holding an open day on October 23 for over-18 girls seeking to learn the sport.
