Service earns praise from judges
A charity that supports lonely people in Maidstone and surrounding areas has been recognised by a national newspaper.
West Kent Befriending Service, a collaboration between Age UK and Mind, was shortlisted for The Guardian Charity Awards, which rewards small and mediumsized charities that improve social wellbeing. The befriending service was one of 30 finalists and although it did not win, Matt Smith, assistant producer at Guardian Live, advised staff to apply again next year.
He said: “The judges commend you for all the excellent work you undertake within your community. To have made the shortlist out of more than 800 entries is a great achievement and we would encourage you to enter again next year.” The service, the subject of the Kent Messenger’s Give the Gift of Friendship campaign last year, encourages volunteers to spend time with someone who is isolated due to age or mental health problems.
