Planning fee will go up 20% in July

Kent Messenger Maidstone - - FRONT PAGE -

There will be some extra money for Maidstone’s beleaguered planning department, after all.

The Government announced last month that it would permit local authorities to raise their planning fees – the charges made to developers to consider their applications – by 20% from July, as long as they promised to spend the extra revenue within their planning departments.

The Government was concerned that its aim to increase house- building across the country was being slowed by local authorities not having the staff to process applications promptly.

All political parties at Maidstone were in favour of the fee hike, which was accepted with a unanimous vote. The increases should bring in £180,000 to the planning department in the coming financial year.
