Woman dies after crash

A woman who was left fighting for her life after a crash on the Dartford Crossing has died.

The 21-year-old, from Essex, was driving her Audi A1 on the Kent-bound carriagewa­y of the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge when she was involved in a collision with a lorry at 4.42am on Friday.

The collision happened on the Kent side of the Thames, and a 25-year-old man from Croydon was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

The woman was airlifted to King’s College Hospital in London in a serious condition but died on Monday.

The bridge was closed for nine hours while the emergency services dealt with the incident. Traffic was diverted through the Dartford tunnel, and drivers were advised to avoid the area and use the Blackwall Tunnel instead.

The driver of the lorry has since been released on bail while inquiries continue.

Several response cars and two ambulances were called to the Green Street Green Road entrance of Dartford’s Darenth County Park after a member of the public made the grim discovery just after midday on Monday.

A police spokesman said: “We were called at 12.06pm to a report of a man’s body being found on woodland below the A2 flyover near to Green Street Green Road, Dartford.

“Officers attended, and the death is currently being treated as non-suspicious.”

The entrance to the popular beauty spot was cordoned off while officers conducted their inquiries.

An hour before the incident officers had been called to nearby Darenth Wood Road after reports of a disturbanc­e.

No offence had been committed and they soon left the area.
