Man ar­rested af­ter death of 23-year-old

A man has been ar­rested af­ter a 23-year-old died fol­low­ing a dis­tur­bance at a house in East Malling.

Po­lice were called to Lark­spur Close shortly be­fore 7pm on Mon­day, where two peo­ple who re­port­edly knew each other were in­volved in a fight.

The vic­tim, named lo­cally as Richard Betts, was taken to hos­pi­tal where he later died.

Of­fi­cers were at the scene un­til Tues­day af­ter­noon and ar­rested a man in his 40s from the East Malling area in con­nec­tion with the in­ci­dent.

He was later bailed to re­turn to a po­lice sta­tion on July 17.

An in­ves­ti­ga­tion is on­go­ing to de­ter­mine the cause of death and a post-mortem ex­am­i­na­tion is due to take place to­day (Thurs­day).

A vol­un­tary re­fer­ral has also been made to the In­de­pen­dent Of­fice for Po­lice Con­duct (IOPC), in re­la­tion to Kent Po­lice’s re­sponse to the in­ci­dent.

Mr Betts, a 23-year-old fa­ther re­mem­bered by friends and fam­ily on so­cial me­dia as an “all round top man” with a “kind heart”.
